SAFETY
Travelers should always stay cautious and take common-sense safety precautions while on St. Maarten/St. Martin. Avoid walking alone on quiet or deserted streets, especially after dark. It’s best to use only marked taxis booked through reputable services to ensure safe transportation.
Keep your valuables secure by locking them in your hotel safe. Never leave handbags, phones, or other valuables unattended in cars or on the beach. Though all 37 beaches are public and beautiful, note that no lifeguards are on duty, so swim responsibly.
Using credit cards is recommended over carrying large amounts of cash for added security and convenience.

Visitors needing assistance can contact the St. Maarten Tourist Office on the Dutch side at +1-721-549-0200. They provide helpful information about local attractions, events, transportation, and travel tips to make your stay enjoyable.
On the French side, the St. Martin Tourist Office is available at +590-590-87-57-21 or +590-590-51-05-30. Their staff offers guidance on French-side culture, activities, festivals, and practical services for tourists.

DRINKING WATER
St. Maarten and St. Martin do not have any natural freshwater sources. Instead, all tap water comes from a desalination plant that converts seawater into drinking water. This method makes water more expensive and valuable than in many other places.
Because water is limited and costly, both visitors and residents are strongly encouraged to use it carefully and conserve whenever possible. Saving water helps protect the island’s fragile environment and ensures there is enough for everyone’s needs.
For drinking, spring and mineral water are widely available for purchase throughout the island, making it easy to stay hydrated while enjoying your stay.
TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
Renting a car lets you explore St. Maarten/St. Martin with ease. Cruise through mountain roads and lush tropical forests to find your perfect sunny spot.
To rent, you must be at least 18 and have held your driver’s license for one year. Seatbelts and child seats are mandatory. Payments require a major credit card.
Drive on the right, obey the 50 km/h (30 mph) speed limit in towns, and never use your phone or drink while driving. Gas stations are available island-wide, with many open 24 hours. Parking is generally easy and secure at most hotels.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Minibuses cover most areas of the island, offering a convenient and affordable way to get around. Although there’s no fixed schedule, there are dedicated bus stops where passengers can wait.
To board a minibus, simply stand by the roadside or at a bus stop and raise your hand to signal the driver. Most minibuses accept both euros and US dollars, making payment easy and straightforward for visitors.
Besides official transportation, some individuals known locally as “gypsies” offer unregistered taxi services. For safety and peace of mind, it is best to rely on licensed taxis or pre-booked rides.
